Bio

Amy Shapiro grew up outside of Washington DC and was influenced by both its easy access to museums and the riot grrrl music and activism scene.

A graduate of the University of Arizona MFA program, she has exhibited widely in museums, galleries, and non-profit and alternative art spaces. Solo exhibitions include “Sweet Nothing” in Tucson, “Some Small Desire” in Washington DC, and “Remember to Call: Portraits of Post-Adolescent Anxiety” in Newark, Delaware. Her work is in collections in New York, Washington DC, Tucson, Virginia, Delaware, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

In 2006 she took up a traditional tattoo apprenticeship and has been working at Black Rose Tattooers ever since. She continues to teach at the college level and contributes illustrations, writing, and photography to various publications.
